Virus expected to peak May 8-10

Reports from Mexico City suggest that many hospitals and ICUs are becoming saturated with Covid-19 patients, with hospital bed capacity in the capital shrinking rapidly.

Nationally, Covid-19 bed capacity is running at 33 percent (6,754 beds occupied) at 681 hospitals equipped to treat novel coronavirus patients.

On Thursday, May 7, Mexico’s Ministry of Health (Ssa)reported 257 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, the highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic. Confirmed infections in the country increased to 29,616 – the 20th highest in the world. The overall death toll rose to 2,961.

Because testing throughout the country is mostly limited to hospital admissions, health authorities acknowledge that the number of infections is probably ten times higher than the official figures.
