Mexico registered another 639 Covid-19 deaths Thursday, July 30, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to exactly 46,000.
This nation is now just 86 deaths shy of the United Kingdom – the country with the world’s third highest fatality tally.
Mexico’s extremely high mortality rate of 11 percent (of confirmed cases), compared to just over three percent in the United States, is clear evidence that cases here are vastly underreported. This week, an infectious disease specialist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security said Mexico’s woeful lack of testing, tracing and isolating could mean the true tally of cases at the current time is close to seven million.
Even the normally diplomatic Anthony Fauci, one of the lead members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, this week urged Mexico to do more to contain the pandemic – in particular in enforcing the use of face masks and correct social distancing.
