Health warning labels make their mark

The new warning labels on products that are high in saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, sodium or calories are starting to appear on supermarket shelves in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

pg5The stark, black octagons also warn about products that ought not to be consumed by children.

The obligatory measure enters into force on October 1, but food production companies have a grace period of two months before financial sanctions kick in for non-compliance with the regulation.

The main objective of the measure is to reduce obesity in Mexico. According to the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Cenaprece), seven out of ten adults in Mexico are either overweight or obese.

Warning labels have been introduced in other Latin American countries, notably Uruguay and Chile, where health authorities have reported a reduction in obesity.
