US oil giant coming to Guadalajara

Marathon Petroleum, one of the largest energy companies in the United States, will make its service station debut in Guadalajara in October.

In early 2019, Marathon Petroleum announced it would be investing $US300 million in Mexico over the next three years. In addition to the conversion of Pemex service stations, the resources would be used for two fuel storage projects, the company said at the time.

Marathon has installed its Arco brand at 136 service stations in Sonora, Baja California and Chihuahua, and is now ready to expand south in order to reach its goal of 400 gas stations throughout Mexico by 2022.

Arco sells “Top Tier” detergent gasoline, which has an additive endorsed by some of the most important vehicle manufacturers in the world. This fuel helps keep engines cleaner for optimal fuel economy, improved engine performance and lower emissions, manufacturers say.

Marathon is also currently constructing a storage terminal for 660,000 barrels of oil in Rosarito, Baja California, through a contract with a subsidiary CFE Energía, with an outlay of 100 million dollars. The company is also undertaking a similar investment in conjunction with Sempra Energy’s subsidiary, IEnova, in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, to store one million barrels.

Founded in 1887, Marathon Petroleum is worth US$35.7 billion, employs 43,800 people and has a turnover of US$71.8 billion. It is ranked 216 on the Forbes Global 2000 list.
