Mexican Senate in favor of trial of ex-presidents

Mexico’s Senate Wednesday voted 65 to 49 to approve a national referendum on whether at least three former presidents should stand trial for acts of corruption during their periods in office.

The motion passed due to the majority of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s Morena Party.  Senators from the National Action Party (PAN) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) – the parties the accused presidents represented – all voted against the proposal. The referendum measure will now move to the Chamber of Deputies (lower house), where Morena also holds the majority.
