Jalisco is increasing its Covid-19 bed capacity in a bid to ease the burden on the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), whose hospitals and ICUs are becoming increasingly stretched as the transmission rate of the virus maintains a steady rhythm in the state.
To avoid rationing out care, another 134 additional Covid-19-designated beds are to be added at the two Civil Hospitals in Guadalajara, the Hospital General de Occidente and the Ángel Leaño Hospital, a private institution that is being utilized by Jalisco authorities during the pandemic.
Governor Enrique Alfaro said Tuesday that IMSS hospitals in Guadalajara – as well as several others around the state – are running at 80 percent capacity, while media reports indicate their ICUs are full with Covid patients.
A major problem, say doctors on the front line, is that large numbers of patients are arriving at IMSS hospitals in a delicate or critical condition because they are waiting until the last moment to seek help.
