Twelve million people in Mexico are likely to receive the Russian Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine, after a preliminary deal was made between the two nations.
Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell traveled to Argentina last week for discussions with Russian scientists promoting the vaccine. Production of the Sputnik V vaccine is slated to be launched in Argentina in the second quarter of 2021.
Should the deal be finalized, Mexico will purchase 24 million doses of the two-dose vaccine.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the Russian vaccine will be used to vaccinate older people in mid-sized cities, while other vaccines (Pfizer/BioNTech, CanSino, Oxford/AstraZeneca) will be used in the country’s largest urban areas.
Sputnik V’s developers say clinical trial data shows the vaccine to have a 95-percent efficacy.
