Mexican tourism boards respond to US Covid test requirements

Tourism resorts around Mexico are rushing to boost their Covid-19 testing capacity before January 26, when all travelers above two years of age seeking to enter the United States by air will need to present proof of a negative test (either PCR or antigen), carried out within three days before their flight.

pg2dTravelers with documentation of having recovered from Covid-19 within the three months before the flight will also be allowed to board.

The situation for travelers to Canada, whose government introduced the same requirement on January 7, is slightly more complicated, as only PCR tests will be accepted, not the rapid antigen tests. The turnaround for PCR tests can be as long as 72 hours, while the results of antigen tests can be available within minutes.

While many of the world’s luxury hotel chains have taken it upon themselves to organize on-site Covid-19 testing for their guests, as well as no-cost or discounted quarantine programs, such measures are beyond the resources of most hotels.

The local tourism board in Los Cabos, a major destination for U.S. tourists,  has worked swiftly in what it calls “an unprecedented effort” to ensure all international travelers visiting the resort “have access to a test before their scheduled departure.”
