AMLO’s upbeat half-term assessment

Touching on themes of migration, the economy, the coronavirus pandemic, social programs and energy policy, President Manuel Lopez Obrador delivered an upbeat third state-of-the-nation report (informe) on September 1.

for 10Significantly, AMLO spent a good deal of time defending his government from accusations that the rights of migrants are being systematically abused, in the wake of shocking images of a Mexican Immigration official kicking an Haitian migrant in the southern state of Chiapas, which circulated around the world this week.

NGOs cite a body of evidence that appears to contradict AMLO’s assertion the rights of migrants in Mexico have never been so assured.

On January 22, 19 incinerated bodies with dozens of bullet wounds were found in a remote rural part of Tamaulipas state. Most were Guatemalan migrants en route to the United States. And in another highly publicized case, on March 27, a migrant woman of Salvadoran origin died at the hands of authorities in Tulum. Abuses of migrants by police and other law enforcement officials are well documented and commonplace, NGOs say.
