A replica of the figure of an indigenous woman from the Huasteca culture that was found earlier this year in a field in the state of Veracruz will replace the Christopher Columbus statue on Mexico City’s famous Avenida de la Reforma.
The Columbus statue was taken down from its plinth just prior to October 12, last year supposedly for restoration, although it had been defaced repeatedly by pro-indigenous rights demonstrators on the Dia de la Raza (Columbus Day) holiday.
Many people see the decision not to put the Columbus statue back in its historical place as a consequence of the pro-indigenous policies espoused by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has sparked a fierce debate on the legacy of colonialism.
