Mexico embraces revamped US security accord

A new agreement between the United States and Mexico that effectively ends the $US3.3 billion Merida Initiative will herald a new era in “equitable” bilateral relations, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said.

pg1d“This has never been the case in the past, “ Ebrard declared after meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken last week.

Although the wording encapsulating the new “Bicentennial Framework for Security, Public Health and Safe Communities” speaks of a new approach to bilateral relations, its meat and bones is similar to its predecessor, seeking to address drug addiction and violence, tackle weapons and human trafficking and disrupt the financial networks that enable criminal groups to flourish.

The White House called the agreement “a holistic cooperation strategy between our countries” that has “full respect for our sovereignties.”
