AMLO’s electricity reforms: US joins chorus of criticism

Many voices north of the border are laying into the controversial constitutional amendment presented by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador,

which seeks to dial back many of his predecessor’s business-friendly energy reforms and favor the state-owned power utility, the Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), over private companies.

Since becoming president, AMLO has made strengthening state-run Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the CFE one of his key policy goals. He believes this is the only way that Mexico can maintain its energy security and sovereignty.

The president has consistently vowed to redress the 2013 energy reform package, that has triggered increased private investment in infrastructure for electricity generation and the development of renewable energy sources.
