President using Cuba as an excuse to wreck Biden’s Americas Summit?

A diplomatic cat and mouse game seemed to be emerging with just days to go before the start of the Ninth Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.

pg1bFor weeks, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has insisted that he would not attend the June 6-10 summit if the Biden administration failed to invite Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.    The U.S. government has made it clear that AMLO is a key component for the summit to achieve its goals, and that the “guest list remains open,” although the summit chair has ruled out the presence of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, and Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega.

The Summit of the Americas brings together leaders from North, South and Central America, and the Caribbean, and has taken place approximately once every three years since 1994. Its stated aim is to “promote cooperation towards region-wide, inclusive economic growth and prosperity based on (our) shared respect for democracy, fundamental freedoms, the dignity of labor, and free enterprise.”
