voters see his Morena party as the most viable option in a political landscape where the country’s two traditional parties, the Partido Revolucionario Institutional (PRI) and National Action Party (PAN), are struggling to energize the electorate with an alternative vision for Mexico.

Opinion polls published prior to the cutoff date (three days before the election) for all campaigning gave Morena leads in five of the six states where statehouses are up for grabs: Hidalgo, Quintana Roo, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca and Durango.  In two of these states, Oaxaca and Quintana Roo, Morena’s double-digit lead appeared unassailable.
