Bullfighting ban in capital halts July & September seasons

Officials at the Plaza México, Mexico City’s historic bullring, say they will fight a decision by a judge placing an indefinite ban on the activity that animal welfare supporters say is an abomination in the modern world.

After closing for a long period during the Covid pandemic, the Plaza Mexico resumed bullfights in April and May, despite a provisional suspension ruling issued last year following a civil lawsuit filed by an NGO.

Plaza Mexico, one of the largest bullfighting arenas in the world, has now been forced to cancel programs planned for July and September.

Officials at Plaza Mexico promised to mount a vigorous campaign to “defend Mexican customs and traditions, to the full extent the law.”
