The influx of “digital nomads” from the United States to Mexico—in particular to the capital (see story right)—has helped spur a sharp increase in the number of temporary and permanent resident visas issued to U.S. citizens.
According to data from Mexico’s Interior Ministry (Gobernacion), 8,412 temporary permits were issued to Americans in the first nine months of 2022, up 85 percent from 2019 (prior to the pandemic). Immigration authorities also issued 5,418 permanent visas to Americans in the same period, an increase of 48 percent from 2019.
The number of temporary permits sought by Americans far outpaces applications by citizens from any other nation, and most entire continents.
The closest nations to the United States are Colombia with 4,654 temporary visas granted, and Cuba with 3,702. In comparison, only 6,268 visas were issued to people from 38 European countries during this period.
