February 14: Love yes, gifts no

A new survey indicates that only 17 percent of Mexicans plan to dig into their pockets to splash out on a loved one for Dia del Amor y la Amistad (the Mexican equivalent of Valentine’s Day) on Tuesday, February 14.

Almost two-thirds (60 percent) of the 500 respondents of the HelloSafe survey said they were “not interested” in celebrating the date, while many of the remaining 40 percent said they will be reluctant to buy flowers, chocolates or booking restaurant dinner for economic reasons, with inflation cited as the main cause of their financial woes.

The survey also noted that 76 percent of those questioned who said they will buy gifts for Dia del Amor y la Amistad plan to spend less than 1,000 pesos. Forty percent of these will be spending less than 500 pesos. Only a small number of respondents said they could afford to spend between 1,000 and 2,000 pesos.
