Biden pleased at cartel leader’s arrest

U.S. President Joe Biden has thanked his Mexican counterpart, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, after Mexican security forces November 22 captured Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas (“El Nini”), the notorious head of security for the Chapitos wing of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The arrest took place without a shot being fired at a property in the exclusive Colinas de Rivera neighborhood of Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa.  The operation involved agents of the federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR), officers from the National Guard, sailors and soldiers, but no local or state police officers.

The 31-year-old became number four in the Los Chapitos criminal structure after assuming the role of head of safety of the children of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the former head of the Sinaloa Cartel who is serving a life sentence in the United States.

His arrest follows Mexico’s arrest and extradition to the United States of  El Chapo’s eldest son, Ovidio Guzmán López, earlier this year.

In a press release, Biden expressed his “appreciation for the brave men and women of the Mexican security forces who undertook this successful operation.”
