NGO highlights abuses in Mexican dairy industry

Recent investigations carried out by the animal rights organization Igualdad Animal document the widespread abuse inflicted on cows and calves in Mexico’s dairy industry, the 15th largest in the world.

pg7b“From the moment they come into this world, they are treated like machines,” the NGO says. “Special bonds between mother and offspring are routinely broken and cows often develop painful medical conditions. Millions of calves are separated from their mothers soon after birth.

“Like humans, cows only produce milk for their young,” Igualdad Animal states in a press release. “The dairy industry hides the fact that in order to produce milk for human consumption, calves must be deprived of being fed by their mothers. A female and her young are forced to go through a cycle of cruelty that ends with her being killed when no longer considered productive.”
