Mexico’s president reignites feud with Spanish king

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has lashed out at King Felipe VI of Spain for giving his annual Human Rights Award to FUNDEJ, a NGO based in Jalisco that searches for missing persons.

pg2b copyAfter the ceremony held last month in Spain, Guadalupe Aguilar, the founder of the collective, commented that AMLO “despises” the families of disappeared people.  Throughout his presidency, AMLO has consistently been accused of minimizing the issue of missing persons, fudging official numbers, and refusing to meet with their relatives.

López Obrador said the relationship between his government and Felipe VI was “not good,” and criticized the Spanish monarch for “receiving anyone who likes to complain” about his presidency, including, most recently, the president of Coparmex (Mexico’s Employers’ Confederation), an organization he claims has links to a rival political party.
