SECTUR ends Pueblo Mágico designations

Mexico’s Tourism Minister, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, announced this week that no new Pueblo Mágico titles will be awarded. Instead, the designation will be replaced by a new category: Pueblo Comunitario (Community Town).

pg13Currently, 177 localities hold the Pueblo Mágico distinction, and they will retain their titles as long as they continue to meet accreditation requirements. Jalisco and Estado de México lead the country with 12 Magic Towns each.

Under President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) aims to reshape the sector by prioritizing localized tourism with a focus on sustainability and community well-being. Pueblo Comunitario towns will be selected through a structured planning and management process aligned with these principles.

As a first step, Sectur has published a draft agreement to modify its internal regulations. Among other measures, this includes establishing the General Directorate of Community and Sustainable Tourism, which will oversee the development and promotion of these new destinations both nationally and internationally. This agency will also coordinate with other authorities to foster community tourism in archaeological sites and areas of historical significance.
