In the latest round of Donald Trump’s “musical tariffs,” the U.S. president announced that he will impose a 30-percent tariff on Mexico, effective August 1.
In two letters addressed to President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump cited the United States’ trade deficit with Mexico and the lack of progress in reducing the trafficking of fentanyl into the U.S. as the reasons behind the new tariffs. Similar letters were sent to Canada and the European Union, with tariffs of 35 percent and 30 percent, respectively, to be imposed by the same deadline. Over 20 countries were notified of the tariffs Trump intends to apply.
Sheinbaum responded calmly to the announcement, expressing confidence that ongoing negotiations on various issues would lead to an agreement that would prevent the tariff from taking effect by the end of July.
