On Wednesday, September 3, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City, resulting in a tough new pledge by both governments to ramp up security cooperation.
A joint statement stressed respect for sovereignty but promised “immediate and targeted actions” to dismantle cartels, shut down fentanyl and arms trafficking, and tighten border security.
A new high-level group will track progress, tackling everything from illegal tunnels and money laundering to fuel theft and cross-border smuggling.
“Our close coordination has already secured the border, reduced fentanyl trafficking, and boosted intelligence sharing,” the statement said. Both sides also vowed to work together on public health campaigns to fight opioid abuse.
