Mexico, Canada, US are ‘stronger together,’ Carney & Sheinbaum agree

Meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney effectively dismissed the idea of Canada abandoning Mexico in the trilateral trade agreement, opting instead for a bilateral deal with the United States, as some of his compatriots have encouraged.

pg1a“Mexico and Canada move forward together, without question,” Carney emphasized in a joint press conference on September 18. “The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (USMCA) is the strength of the three countries combined—that’s what North America is all about. It makes our region the envy of the world.”

This affirmation came after several provincial premiers in Canada had urged Ottawa earlier this year to consider a bilateral trade agreement with the U.S. to avoid being caught up in Washington’s view of Mexico as a “back door” for Chinese imports, particularly in the auto sector.
