President Claudia Sheinbaum this week defended Mexico’s new mandatory cell phone registration policy, “Registro Móvil,” which came into effect on January 9.

Sheinbaum insisted the new requirement is a crucial tool for national security and not an instrument for mass surveillance.
Registro Móvil requires all cellphone users in Mexico to link their active numbers to a verified personal or business identity. The stated objective of the policy is to combat widespread crimes such as extortion, fraud and kidnapping, which are often carried out using anonymous or untraceable mobile lines.
