Briefly Feb. 7, 2026: Degollado ... Del Toro ... Stock market ... Tourism goals

Explore the Degollado

The iconic Degollado Theater in downtown Guadalajara is offering free public access on specific dates this February. Visitors can explore the historic venue from 1 to 3 p.m. on the following days: February 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26.

More Oscar nods for Del Toro

Guadalajara-born director Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” has received nine Academy Award nominations, four fewer than his epic “The Shape of Water” in 2018, for which he won Best Director. The film also won Best Picture.

Stock market gains

Investors are rubbing their hands in glee, as Mexico’s main stock market index, the IPC, has recorded record highs over the past few weeks.  The IPC rose to 69713 points on February 3, a gain of 3.18 percent from the previous session. Over the past month, the index has climbed 7.21 percent and is up 34.54 percent compared to the same time last year.

Tourism goals this year

President Claudia Sheinbaum has set an ambitious tourism goal for 2026: to make Mexico the world’s fifth most-visited country, building on 2025’s record of 88.1 million international visitors.  Mexico ended last year in sixth place, behind France (first place), Spain, the United States, Italy and Turkey.
