Key rail link crosses the finish line

After a 12-year construction period spanning three presidential administrations, the final section of the “El Insurgente” Interurban Train was inaugurated on February 2, creating a seamless, high-capacity rail link between Mexico City (CDMX) and Toluca, the capital of Estado de Mexico.

The last stretch connects the Santa Fe business district to the Observatorio terminal in western CDMX. From there, passengers can directly transfer to Line 1 of the metro network, finally integrating the booming city of Toluca with the heart of the nation’s capital.

The 57.7-kilometer route features seven stations with a journey time of approximately 39 minutes from end to end.  The fleet comprises 20 trains, each with a capacity for 719 passengers. An estimated 140,000 daily passengers are expected to use the route daily. Trains are expected to run every 12 minutes.

The train uses a distance-based fare system. The full trip from the Zinacantepec terminal on Toluca’s outskirts to Observatorio costs 100 pesos, while the fare from Toluca Centro is 90 pesos.   The fare from Santa Fe to Observatorio is 25 pesos, while a single station journey costs 15 pesos.
