Just days after announcing that the 2025-2026 school year would end 40 days early, the Mexican government reconsidered the decision following sharp criticism from parents, state governors and education groups.
President Claudia Sheinbaum had said that the proposed calendar change — which cited extreme heat waves and the June 11 kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — was well thought out and not “a whim.”
But after a weekend of widespread backlash, she announced that the National Council of Educational Authorities would reconvene last Monday to revise the proposal.
