Lyn Rew

Longtime Lakeside resident Lyn Rew passed away on October 19 after a long illness. She was 84 years old.

Born January 8, 1927 in Portland, Oregon, Rew worked in real estate for many years and then became a fashion buyer for department stores in the Portland area.

She moved to Mazatlan, Mexico in the late 1970s and to the Lake Chapala area in the early 1980s. Rew concentrated on the development of her superior innate artistic talent and became an active member of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA), serving on the board of directors for many years. Her paintings were often featured at ASA shows and she eventually became well-known for her yarn designs set in beeswax in the Huichol tradition. She was also an avid and very sharp Bridge player, enjoying those games with her friends frequently.

A friend that she had met during a business trip to Alaska in 1960, Kay Guthrie, turned up in Ajijic in 1985. Guthrie and Rew renewed their romantic relationship.

Guthrie retired to Ajijic in 1990 and they spent the next 19 years together. They married in June 2002. Guthrie passed away in 2009.

Rew is survived by sons, Brian Rew of Ajijic and Mike Rew of Carlos, Louisiana. She had two grandchildren, Nicole Rew and Brandy Rew of Portland, Oregon and Jeremy Rew of Shoreline, Washington. She had one great-grandson.

Rew will be remembered by her many friends for her superior organizational skills, her broad smile and quick laughter and her grace under fire. She requested that no memorial service be held.
