Joan Aselin

Ajijic resident Joan Aselin died in a local hospital on November 11 at the age of 73.

Born December 21, 1927 in Toronto, Ontario, Aselin grew up in the Toronto area and moved to Nova Scotia in the 1960s. She met and married Herb Aselin in 1979 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she worked for Revenue Canada until her retirement.

The Aselins moved to Ajijic in 1998 and soon became involved in community life. Joan was a longtime member of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA), a lifetime member of the Lake Chapala Society, a supporter of the Niños del Rio project in Chapala and Programa Pro Niños Incapacitados. She enjoyed the company of Mexican people and was quick to adopt Mexico as her own.

Her husband predeceased her in 2006. Survivors include daughters Barbara Illes (husband Kerry) and Debra Kayser, stepchildren Bill Aselin and Valerie Hudgins, granddaughter Nicole Illes and great-grandson Hayden Illes.

Her family wishes to thank Dave and Darlene Pike, Pat Stacey, Danny Borkowski, Lydia Cortez and Luz Guerrero and many others for their great kindnesses to Joan in her last days.

Plans for a memorial service are pending.
