Edmundo Sanchez Nuño

Prominent Chapala business entrepreneur Edmundo Sanchez Nuño died November 17 in a Guadalajara hospital at the age of 83.

The son of Jose Sanchez and Guadalupe Nuño, he was born in Chapala on August 22, 1928 and grew up to become a widely admired community leader.

He served as vice president of the municipal government from 1995 to 1997. During that period he was instrumental in establishing a local branch of the University of Guadalajara’s lakeshore region campus in Ocotlan that operated for several years before the university’s administrative hierarchy abandoned the project.

He was a stalwart supporter of the Chapala Red Cross, and regular sponsor of local sports and education programs. He and his late brother Gustavo were key players in the organization of Chapala’s annual Mardi Gras festivities during their glory days.

Sanchez’s greatest legacy is Productos Sane, the successful Chapala-based enterprise he founded more than five decades ago. He started up the company to produce and market sangrita, the popular scarlet-hued tequila chaser made from orange juice and red chile powder invented by his own parents. Today, Sane also bottles a line of hot sauces commonly found on the shelves of major supermarkets and smaller grocery outlets.

Following a November 18 funeral mass, Sanchez was cremated and his ashes deposited in a crypt at the San Francisco parish. He leaves behind his widow, Liliana Ramirez, three sons, two daughters and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
