Daniel Flores

Lakeside resident Daniel “Dan” Flores died April 1 after a brief illness at the age of 72.

Born February 15, 1940 in Santiago, Chile, Flores moved to Burbank, California after working for the Chilean government for a time. He operated an upscale antique shop in Burbank and then relocated to Salem, Oregon in 1977. It was there he raised his two daughters after the death of his first wife.

Flores worked as a counselor and translator for the Oregon State Mental Hospital and Fairview Hospital. His daughter introduced him to Dorothy Christine Campbell in 1984. They were married on December 29, 1984 in Beaverton, Oregon, after a six-week courtship. Prior to his retirement, Flores worked for the Salem School District and enjoyed wood-working, making trunks, jewelry boxes and handcrafted furniture.

The Floreses moved to the Lakeside area in 1996 and Dan immediately became involved in the community. His assistance as a translator, facilitator and teacher was widely sought throughout the community. A warm and loving man, he was a friend and a help to all. He never met a stranger. His cheerful smile and beguiling sense of humor were a delight to everyone he met.

He is survived by his wife Chris, his sister Carmen Flores of Santiago, his two daughters and their spouses, Frances and Rick Levering and Claudia and Kenny Chapman, stepdaughter Susan Greek and her husband Michael, stepson Robert Campbell and his wife Katherine and stepson Will Campbell. His 12 grandchildren include Megan, George, Shelby, Brendan, Nikki, Alexis, Chase, Ely, Ben Jill, Lily and Robin.

A memorial celebration of Flores’ life will be held Saturday, April 28, 11 a.m. at American Legion Post  Seven, Morelos 114 in Chapala, with Pastor Larry Andrew officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Society or another favorite charity would be appreciated.
