Jack Menmott

Jack (Zack) Memmott died peacefully in his Ajijic home on April 24, after a long bout with cancer. He was 86 years old.

Born April 15, 1926 in Elkhart, Indiana, Memmott was raised primarily in California. He served honorably as a tail gunner during World War II and then earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Woodbury College in 1946.

Memmott fell in love with Mexico and its people while attending a six-month education program in Mexico City in 1951. During his 30 years of living in Mexico he participated in many activities, including the Lakeside Little Theatre and the Lake Chapala Society, where he volunteered in the office and at the information desk for more than ten years.

Although few people were aware of it, Memmott was a gourmet cook. Everyone knew that he truly enjoyed sweet treats provided by a variety of Lakeside bakers. See’s Candy and TGI Friday’s potato skin snack chips were always on his request list for those heading this way from north of the border.

His parents, his brother James Memmott and his partner James Powell all preceded him in death. His friends want to extend special thanks to Hospice of Chapala, Jean Bowden, Ann Heath, Amara Brouwers and the many volunteers who made his final days comfortable.

At his request, no memorial service will be held. Memmott was a loyal supporter of the Cruz Roja and requested that donations in his name be made to that organization for their support.
