Alice Hathaway

Alice Isabelle Moomaw Hathaway passed away November 5 after a long illness at the age of 92.

Born May 27, 1920, in a farmhouse near Greenfield, Ohio, Hathaway obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University and a degree in English from the University of Miami.

She worked as a draftsman in an airplane plant at the beginning of World War II, but soon enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific as a censor. She married John Hathaway in 1950. She was a substitute teacher and active in local politics in a suburb of Detroit and served on the school board of St. Clair Shores.

The Hathaways settled in Ajijic in the mid-1970s. She often wrote articles for local publications, knitted sweaters for the Needlepushers organization and frequently donated her time and treasure to local charities. She was a long-time member of the Lake Chapala Society and often recalled the time when the Chili Cookoff was more like a group of friends getting together on the beach. She was an avid reader and a loyal member of the Great Books Club.

Her husband John preceded her in death in 2002.

Hathaway is survived by her three children, Elinor Hathaway (Paul) Niemisto of Northfield, Minnesota, Thomas (Benita) Hathaway of Hopewell, Pennsylvania and Gerald Hathaway of Ajijic. Her elder sister, Elizabeth O’Conner resides in Angels Camp, California. She had eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

No memorial services are planned.
