Obituary - January 14, 2017

Susana Douglas

Beverly Doty Holmes (known at Lakeside as Susana Douglas) died peacefully at her home in Jaltepec on December 9, 2016 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer six months ago.

Born November 9, 1938, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Douglas attended public schools in Lincoln, and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a major in mathematics.  She moved to California after her graduation, and worked for IBM in the San Francisco Bay area.

“Bev” was a fixture of River Child Care in Guerneville, California, where she gained a reputation as an activist for justice and peace issues, a seeker of spirit, and an obsessive creator of beauty.  She was highly spiritual and influenced by Hindu and Buddhist teachings.

Douglas was well read and enjoyed discussing politics and the philosophy of life.  She wanted to participate in making the world a better place to live. She was an avid spinner, beader and needlepoint expert, and also had a great eye for color.

Douglas lived in Mexico for 16 years.  She volunteered at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) library for more than a decade, always keeping the other librarians and volunteers on their toes.

She is preceded in death by her parents Howard and Dorothy Doty, her son Douglas and her ex-husband Dick Holmes. She is survived by her brother Howard of Colorado and her son Scott, currently in New York.

A celebration of life is planned at LCS on Wednesday, January 18, 4 p.m.
