Darlene Carol Lockey

Darlene Lockey died at her home in Chapala Haciendas January 13 after a short illness.

Born January 9, 1940 in Berwyn, Illinois, Lockey was in the first class of the University of Illinois Dental Assisting Program, and upon graduation was hired as an instructor in that program.

Always an adventurer, she found herself sailing off on the medical ship, the SS Hope, to Bogota, Columbia for a year. Upon her return home, she needed a new challenge so she joined a scuba diving class at the local YMCA.  It was there that she found her true love, Harry (Henry) Lockey, a scuba instructor.  As the story goes, as soon as Harry saw Darlene, he was determined he would take her under his wing.  They were married May 31, 1969.

Again the bug of adventure took the Lockeys by the hand leading them to Caplinger Mills, a modest little town west of Springfield, Missouri.  While Harry pursued his career as a construction foreman, Darlene settled into gardening, keyboarding and raising pigs on their small farm. This new hobby began when Harry presented Suey, a piglet, as a Christmas present.

Harry’s job soon took them on journeys across the United States and Canada returning to the farm between assignments.  The computer age struck, and soon Darlene was seeking the ideal location for retirement.  In no time she discovered Chapala.  A six-month visit had them convinced this was the place to be!   They moved down permanently in October 2008.

Darlene and Harry embraced the people in the community and enjoyed every minute of their time here with their many dear friends.

Harry preceded Darlene in death in April 2014.  Darlene’s sister, Dawn Myers, sister-in-law Maureen Brauch, and many nieces, nephews and cousins survive.  She was predeceased by brother Del Brauch and sister Diane Stevens.
