May Nelson Sutton

May Nelson Sutton passed away Saturday, January 6 in her home in Chapala at the age of 83.

pg14bBorn August 31, 1934, to Howard and May Sutton of Richmond, Virginia, May graduated from Virginia Intermont College, Bristol, Virginia and later earned a Master of Arts in Science Education from University of Northern Colorado.

May committed many years to science education and at the age of 50 joined the Peace Corps where she taught in Swaziland. She ultimately retired from the Virginia Beach City Public Schools in the mid-1990s at which time she began traveling around the world. She was fearless in her travels and made lifelong friends along the way.

She eventually settled in Chapala, which was to become her home for the next 20 years.

May was a free spirit and not afraid to follow her bliss.  She loved life and always lived it to the fullest.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Evans Breckenridge Steele, Jr. (Breck) and daughter, Mollie Steele-Merna; her granddaughters, Meredith Ellyson Merna and Elizabeth Wren Merna and her niece, Beth Robinson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and May Sutton and her brother, Howard Sutton, Jr.
