Obituary - May 18, 2019

Gordon Alfred Cowan

Long-time lakeside resident Gordon Alfred Cowan died on April 21, Easter Sunday.

Born in Toronto, Canada on September 12, 1932, Gordon worked for 39 years as a salesman for Grand and Toy Ltd., selling office furniture and products.  In Canada, he was very active in the Lions Club and was part of a group that started a baseball team that is still active some 50 years later.

Gordon was a member of St. John’s Norway Anglican Church for over 20 years, serving as warden for six years and on the board of the Cemetery Committee for 15 years.

Gordon and his wife, Naomi, moved to Chapala in 1997.  Since coming to Mexico, he has remained an active volunteer, particularly at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.  He generally helped out wherever he was needed.

Gordon loved playing cards and joined in bridge games for many years.  Wednesday and Friday afternoons would see him playing Dealer’s Choice Poker, and on Thursdays and Saturdays sitting in on a Hold-em game.  Tuesday afternoons he would enjoy playing Bingo.

Gordon was pre-deceased by his first wife, Naomi, after 39 years of marriage.  He later met and married Patricia Stacey.  They had 12 wonderful years of marriage before Patricia died from cancer three years ago.

Gordon is survived by his son, Roderick Cowan; his daughter, Lara Whelan and two grandchildren, Liam and Amber Lea.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.
