Not your average wildlife calendar

In 2008 a group of dedicated individuals came together to rescue local wildlife, plants and birds in and around the coastal towns of Melaque and Barra de Navidad on Jalisco’s Costalegre.

Collaborating closely with the University of Guadalajara, the non-profit group ProLaTule has been working towards the goal of restoring a natural wildlife area known as the Laguna del Tule.  Many species use the laguna as a natural resting point on their migratory path or as a breeding ground.

To raise money for the project ProLaTule has held benefits and other fundraisers. This winter, however, they have come up with a more creative way of filling their coffers.

They have produced a 15-month calendar, starting in December 2012 and going through February 2013, that is truly unique and memorable.

A group of students and teachers from the Centro de Iniciacion Artistica for dance and music volunteered to model and have their bodies airbrushed to look like birds or animals.  Body Paint by Bazan Lab in Guadalajara used images of the wildlife, taken on the laguna by Melanie Hester of Villa Obregon, as their painting guide, then photographer Roxane David (also of Villa Obregon) used the laguna as the backdrop for the calendar’s images.  Laura Resendiz of Guadalajara also volunteered her time to the photography.

To round out the team, Irma Erazo, Socorro Quintero and Erendira Saddana volunteered many hours to making sure the project succeeded.

The suggested donation for purchasing this unique calendar is 150 pesos. Businesses are also encouraged to stock the calendars for sale to the public.
