Sanctuary saves record number of sea turtles

Conservationists from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) sheltered a record number of sea turtle nests at a Jalisco sanctuary this year.

To protect the turtles from poaching and pollution, conservationists from the UdeG’s southern coastal campus (Cucsur) sheltered 6,013 nests at the Campamento La Gloria sanctuary in the municipality of Tomatlan.

“Furthermore, 592,325 eggs were protected and 445,386 hatchlings were released into the sea,” revealed Jose Antonio Trejo Robles, coordinator of the sea turtle conservation program. This marks a significant increase on the 276,201 hatchlings released from 395,250 eggs in 4,250 nests in 2011.
