Barra de Naviad is back in business

Barra de Navidad’s beach has been restored to the pristine condition it enjoyed before Hurricane Jova ripped through the Jalisco coastal town in October 2011.

The popular narrow beach and many of its adjoining properties virtually disappeared in the category five storm.

Major renovation work in the beach area – including importing thousands of tons of sand – and nearby lagoon has cost the state government up to 300 million pesos.

Visiting the town Thursday, Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval said he won’t stop there and promised to continue spending, to make the transformation of Barra a focal point for the development of Costalegre.

Future plans include a new malecon and convention center, he said.
