Eight-meter tall waves claim life of woman in Puerto Vallarta

Authorities closed all of the beaches in Puerto Vallarta Wednesday after Hurricane Marie generated waves of up to eight meters high on Tuesday evening.

Red flags were posted at all the municipality’s beaches and 120 tourist police, civil protection and fire department personal were placed on patrol to keep people out of the water.

The body of a woman about 50 years old was pulled from the water at Playa Las Glorias Wednesday around 3 p.m.  Officers patrolling the area said they warned the somewhat inebriated woman from entering the water several times, but she insisted on returning to the heavy waves.

Waves broke over the Malecon near the Hotel Buenaventura and destroyed some concrete barriers close to the old lighthouse. Businesses bordering the Olas Altas and Boca de Tomates beaches were also affected by the waves, which began diminishing in size late Wednesday afternoon and were back to normal as of Thursday morning.
