Judge exonerates child abuse suspect, is suspended

A judge who dismissed charges of sexual abuse against a Puerto Vallarta public official has been relieved of his duties and his bank accounts frozen.

pg1bLuis Alonso “N” was arrested July 26 after being discovered in his car with a naked 10-year-old girl in the passenger seat. At the time of the incident, he served as the director of human resources at the Puerto Vallarta municipal police department. He has since been removed from his post.

Judge Jorge Luis Solís Aranda decided not to bind the suspect over for trial after ruling that the accusation did not meet the legal criteria for “corruption of minors.” In an oddly worded decision, he said the case should not proceed because “la niña no había sentido placer” (the girl did not feel any pleasure).

The ruling provoked an immediate backlash, both in the tourist resort – a noisy protest was held in the Plaza de Armas – and across social media platforms.

Governor Enrique Alfaro tweeted Sunday, August 16, that he spoke to the chief justice of the Jalisco Supreme Court, who “confirmed to me that the Judiciary Council will take action on the matter immediately.”
