Downhill 2026 brings world-class cycling daredevils to PV Malecón

Jalisco’s push to position itself as a global destination for sports tourism gains speed this May with the return of Downhill Puerto Vallarta, an urban mountain biking competition that transforms the city’s historic center into a high-octane racetrack.

pg4Scheduled May 1 to 3, the event will see 40 riders from 12 countries race down a 900‑meter circuit that weaves through staircases, alleys, and natural drops overlooking Banderas Bay, culminating at the Malecón.

The competition, which is free and family‑friendly, is expected to draw more than 30,000 spectators who can watch from sidewalks, stairs, and balconies as athletes reach breakneck speeds on a technical course designed by world‑class experts, including Ollie Wilkins, Christian Fairclough and Liam Mason. Confirmed participants include international stars such as Rémy Métailler and Kilian Bron, as well as Mexican riders Peter Salido and Ray Fournier, who represent the country’s growing talent in extreme cycling.

Beyond the adrenaline, the event is a cornerstone of Jalisco’s broader strategy to boost tourism ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. State Tourism Secretary Michelle Fridman Hirsch noted that Jalisco is building a robust calendar of cultural, gastronomic, and sporting events to attract visitors and project the state globally. With media partners including ESPN, Disney+ and National Geographic, Downhill Puerto Vallarta also offers significant international visibility for the destination.

Activities begin on Friday, May 1, with practice and course familiarization, followed by the main competition and a Best Trick showcase on Saturday, May 2.
