Seat belt fine increases ten-fold

Increased fines for four traffic violations in Jalisco came into effect on February 1.

State transit law now specifies that fines amounting to between 10 and 30 days of minimum salary (60.57 persos) can be levied for the following offenses.

- Driving without a seat belt.

- Not using a child’s seat or retention system for children under the age of 12.

- Exceeding the speed limit.

- Driving without insurance.

Under the new rules, the fines can range from a minimum of 605.70 pesos to a maximum of 1,817.10 pesos.  The Department of Transportation (SVT), however, says that at present it will charge the minimum fine for all four offenses.

The fines for not using a seat belt or a child’s seat have increased substantially; previously they were 60.57 pesos and 121.14 pesos respectively.

SVT chiefs also want state legislators to raise the fine for not using a motorcycle helmet – currently 60.57 pesos – to a minimum of 605.70 pesos.
