Fear of crime up 60 percent

Fear of being a victim of crime has risen 60 percent in Jalisco in the last three years, according to a study published this week by the Citizens’ Institute of Studies on Insecurity.

The rise in the perception of danger is in part a consequence of the population’s increased exposure to information via real-time news and (often false) rumors spread on social-networking sites, suggested Andres Palomera Chavez, one of the investigators. Palomera also said the results show that people consider the streets to be the most dangerous place and the home to be the safest.
