Colima highway expansion finished

Having transformed an additional 34.4 kilometers of the Guadalajara-Colima toll road into a four-lane highway, all that remains is for President Felipe Calderon to fly in and officially cut the ribbon on the new stretch.

Construction of the new stretch of autopista (located between kilometers 69 and 103) took 18 months to complete and cost 250 million pesos.

Just 24 kilometers of the highway (between Cuatro Caminos and Tonila) are still two lanes and comprise the second part of the project.  Eight kilometers will be finished within two months and the remaining 16 within the next presidential term. When complete, the entire route from Guadalajara to Manzanillo will be four lanes.

The outstanding stretch, however, will be the most costly and complicated, since it encompasses several tall bridges spanning massive canyons, including El Nuevo, El Tapon and El Atenquique.
