Drink sensibly, tequila chamber urges

The National Chamber of the Tequila Industry (CNIT) has launched a workshop to encourage responsible drinking.

Despite making a living off the sale of tequila, representatives of the 70 businesses that comprise the chamber say they are keen to promote sensible consumption of alcoholic beverages.

“It is preferable to decrease our sales than (for people) to continue consuming in an excessive manner,” said CNIT President Eduardo Orendain Giovannini.

While it is fair to say Mexicans enjoy a drink, they do not knock it back as much as the French, Orendain observed. The average Mexican consumes 8.42 liters of alcoholic beverages per year, while French citizens manages 13 liters per year.  Mexico’s problem lies in one-off binge sessions, Orendain added, noting that “many drink more in one weekend than others drink all year.”
