State gas pipeline explodes

Around 500 people were evacuated from their homes in the village Corralillos near Zapotlanejo, Jalisco after a Pemex gas pipeline caught fire Thursday, October 19.

Authorities closed the nearby toll road booth on the Zapotlanejo-Morelia autopista and traffic was diverted on to the free highway,

Firefighters took more than 39 hours to control the blaze that was visible from a large distance.  The highway reopened on Sunday.

Two Pemex workers were slightly injured in the fire, which was caused by damage to the pipeline carrying LP gas from Cactus, Guanajuato  to Guadalajara.

According to a Jalisco Civil Protection press release, the 14-inch pipeline was punctured by an excavator from a private housing contraction company doing unlicensed work in the area.
