Spendthrift Congress

Jalisco State Congress employees ended a sit-in this week after being promised payment of their final two-week paychecks and end-of-session bonuses.  Incoming legislators – who will be sworn in on November 1 – have vowed to drastically reduce their expenses after Congress this month ran out of funds to pay 800 employees, most of whom have now had their contracts rescinded.  State congressman have received over two billion pesos in the last three years to cover their high salaries, aides and other expenses. This means it has cost taxpayers over 52 million pesos (four million dollars) for each  of the 39 Jalisco legislators over  the last three years.
